Copper

Nuestra Tierra features copper vessels from the town of Santa Clara del Cobre in Michoacan, where the finest hammered copper work is created.

This is the only place in Mexico where all articles are hammered from a single piece or tejo, with no welding involved. Red-hot metal is hammered to allow the material to be stretched. This process may require up to ten men working simultaneously. The master craftsman shapes and decorates the piece and finally bathes it in sulfuric acid, rubs it with steel wool — dipped in soap and water — and polishes it until shining.

What emerges is a beautiful piece of art whose rich colors and memory of fire will warm any home.

Silverplate and Stone

The designer of our silverplate collection is Wolmar "Tito" Castillo of Taxco. Wolmar is the son of famed Taxco jewelry designer Antonio Castillo, founder of Los Castillo workshop that contributed greatly to the development of Taxco jewelry in the 40's and 50's.

Wolmar specializes in "hollowware," in the form of pitchers, trays and vases. The silver is complemented by intricate stonework details in the form of crocodiles, peacocks and lemurs. Wolmar's work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and he is often been called on to lecture on the topic of modern Taxco silverwork.

Silver

Thought to have dropped from the moon, silver has been considered a mystical object since pre-Hispanic cultures.

The silver pieces offered by Nuestra Tierra were created by award-winning Master Craftsmen from Michoacan who made their name first in copper work. The silver is certified .999 purity and each piece is expertly hammered into these classic shapes. Each piece is signed by the artist and represents the best in Mexican craftsmanship.
